All of you have fabulous taste in books, so I'm curious if you've been reading something good. I'm looking for some sort of fiction, since between life and our regular book selection around here of history/politics/media , I think I'm sorted on the real world for a bit. And I've spent enough time in the Hudson Bookstore in Penn Station lately, so I'm not going for top 10/bestsellers. (Also, dear everyone, please do not stand in the erotica section of said bookstore staring at people. Dude, gross! Get an internet.)

After all the hoopla, I'm curious about Barbara Walters' memoir, although the cover looks more Danielle Steel than Serious Book.

Yes, Sippey, I've already read The Road.

bike or death...

...has always felt like the choice here in Boston. But I miss my bike! I am not a particularly graceful bike rider, or a competitive one, or even a very successful one, but I love it. I learned how to put one together, and when it broke on a rainy night in Portland, how to fix it myself. I have been known to slam my fist on the back of a few cars who cut me off (thanks to Chris for teaching me that one in SF) and ride to the beach, music in my ears and feet balancing on the pedals, flying around a corner in SF. I want Dodai's bike.

Boston has always intimidated me on a bike, though - the streets here are so intensely ass-backwards that I have a hard time even driving around here. Not to mention how many times I've nearly been clipped just walking across the street. The Boston ethos of traffic seems to be "don't look, just go". I haven't had a bike the whole time I've lived here, and I miss it. I really, really want to ride. But where? and why? and how?

Does anyone in Boston who is not a crazy fixie bike messenger type (although I love you all) ride here? What is the strategy? How is it done? Should I just shut up and stop being a pussy, or what?

I started reading Jen Lemen's blog a while ago, and I'm not even sure how I found it. She seems to be a very kind soul with the same sort of ups and downs I'm so familiar with - two steps forward, one to the side, hop and skip, try and fail and try again, just trying to make the world you live in a little bit better.

The story is both complex and simple: a friend of hers, Odette, is from Rwanda and hasn't been able to go back to see her daughters for two years. Odette's story is told in little bursts, but Jen is going to Rwanda to visit those girls and others. She's made a series of kid's books that she is selling on Etsy, and distributing to girls in four schools in Africa when she arrives - a little book about empowerment, that little things really can change the world. This book came together in a matter of weeks - you should go read the whole story for yourself to see how things all came together with the power of the internet, a little bit of hope, and a lot of kindness. These are the little things about the internet that make me happy to play a part in it.

You can buy one from her Etsy shop to help her along in her Girl Power Rwanda Trip - she leaves tomorrow!

A reasonable (meaning no holds barred on any candidate) deconstruction of pork-barrel spending from my one of my favorites, Matt Taibbi:

The thing that's really vile about earmarks is how cheaply we all get sold out. Two million of your taxpayer bucks in exchange for a $5,000 donation? Greenlighting a billion-dollar Pentagon boondoggle for a couple of free flights? Hey, if you're going to sell us out, at least fucking bargain. But it's not their money, and they never do.
