Book: Show us a book you started reading but never finished.
I'm pretty good about picking books back up - mostly because I'm usually in the middle of four or five at a time, so I don't consider any that are strewn around the house to be "unfinished". If I shelve it again, then chances are, it'll stay there a few years until the book starts taunting me to be picked up again.
I never would've finished Anna Karenina if it hadn't been for my commute to an office in Redwood City via Caltrain. It once got so good (the "Tolystoy moment" I believe it's called) that I rode to Menlo Park by accident and had to wait another 25 minutes for a northbound train to get me back to where I was supposed to be. But I finished it, 4 years after I started.
That said, I've retired these from the lineup for now. I think Fiasco will be start taunting me before the rest, but damn it's depressing.
Book: Show us one of your favorite works of fiction.
I love everything by Annie Dillard, but a lot of her work is narrative non-fiction, while this is more of historical fiction. If you've ever lived in the Pacific Northwest, you should read this book immediately just for the sentence where she describes the first residents of Bellingham and how hard it was to live there.
